Google has a history of naming new versions of major Android OS releases after popular desserts.

Android 1.5 was codenamed Cupcake while Android 1.6 was named Donut. Android 2.1 was Eclair and Android 2.2 was Froyo. The next version of Android — 3.0 has already been named Gingerbread and is set to release soon.

Rumors surfaced today that the next version of the Android OS, 3.1 or 3.2 will be codenamed Honeycomb. Techradar broke the news and even contacted Google, but hasn’t received any comment yet.

Android is going places; it has a huge lineup of smartphones and tablets which are slated to launch in the next year. Honeycomb will probably support more powerful hardware and higher display resolutions and also offer much better performance.
